Top Job Search Tips For 2016

Top Job Search Tips For 2016Top Job Search Tips For 2016Executive job search need not be a lengthy, convoluted path. In fact, you can achieve the shortest distance between point A and point B by making a straight line directly to the company and the hiring decision maker you need. Following are three strategies to optimize your job search for maximum results in minimum time.1. Shift your mindset from job search to company search.Job searching is a finite activity. Only a limited number of jobs will be advertised. If you apply for one (or two, or ten) and dont hear a response, those opportunities are over. If you interview and are not selected, that also is likely the end of the road. However, a company search uncovers practically infinite options. Build a list of ideal employers, perhaps based on distance from your home, company size, industry or corporate culture. Next, find out whats going on in those organizations. Google nachrichtensendung can provide you with extensive, up-to-dat e insight on whether the company is launching a new product, opening a new division or achieving an industry honor. All these scenarios indicate the company is in growth mode, and organizations that are growing are the ones that need to top your list.2. Offer your value aussage, not just your resume. The best way to use what you uncover in Google News is to factor specific information into your approach to the company. Instead of sending your resume, which 99.9% of your competition is doing, craft a targeted value proposition letter that succinctly states you know what the organization is working on right now and your particular brand of expertise may constitute a solid match. The letter you write is not a place for fluff. Delete all fillers about being a dynamic executive, with extensive leadership success. Put some teeth into this prove your value by presenting quantifiable examples of your achievements, and make sure those accomplishments are on par with the level of impact your id eal company would likely be looking for.3. Approach the decision maker directly.Yes, this last step is easier said than done. However, devote some time to identifying and reaching several of the right decision makers, instead of the same amount of time to blasting your resume far and wide across the Internet, where it will likely reach either resume scanning software or basically nobody.Options abound online. To find out a persons name, Google the likely job title and the company, like this query for example, VP, Marketing IBM. You can conduct a similar search on LinkedIn. Invest in LinkedIn InMail in order to contact the person. GooglePlus and Twitter can be treasure troves, because these are the social media outlets where people place entire professional biographies about themselves, which are often rich with contact information.Every public library in every major city has a free database of business information and executive decision makers you can likely access that from your h ome computer.Searching for companies as opposed to jobs, offering your value proposition instead of your resume, and approaching the decision maker directly are all strategies when, put together, will sharply increase the likelihood that you land the ideal role you want much faster than your competition.

Hiring For Skills Instead of Credentials

Hiring For Skills Instead of Credentials Hiring For Skills Instead of Credentials Its upsetting because thats the most perfect headline for any article about HireArt, and Im jealous that TechCrunch beat me to the punch. That headline is perfect because it succinctly captures HireArts unique essence - solutions-based thinking driven by a healthy irreverence for flawed traditions. The flawed tradition that sparked HireArt? Contemporary recruiting practices, which privilege irrelevant credentials over demonstrable skills, according to Julia Averbuck, HireArts head of operations. What does it mean that someone has a 3.9 GPA at Harvard? Averbuck asks. Yes, it means that theyre hardworking, but that doesnt necessarily mean that they can do this job.The solution? An souped-up take on the job board, one that notlage only syndicates an organizations job posts, but that also screens candidates for you.HireArt wants to be a system that could test someones ability to do the job, and it wants to improve the efficiency of recruiting, when it came to actual skills and not just credentials, Averbuck says.Origin StoryHireArt co-founders Elli Sharef and Nick Sedlet both worked for companies with well-respected recruiting processes. Sharef was with McKinsey Company, whose one-time managing director Marvin Bower was among the first to recruit talent straight out of geschftliches miteinander schools Sedlet was with Goldman Sachs, yet another powerful recruiter of fresh MBAs.But when Sharef moved to her next job, she learned that not every company is as adept at recruiting as McKinsey or Goldman Sachs. A lot of organizations rely on the wildly inefficient post-and-pray method, or other similarly unfocused methods of sourcing.Sharef saw how different it was, and how frustrating recruiting could be, Averbuck says. So what she wanted to do was she wanted to create a process that could replicate the McKinsey process, in that it could pick out the raw talent. It could really figure out who the best candidates are for the job.And as Sharef thought about the idea more, she realized that even the McKinsey process could be improved upon. Powerhouse companies like McKinsey and Goldman Sachs often focus their recruiting strategies on graduates from top-50 schools, artificially limiting their reaches. So, even though they have this great interview process, theyre actually not addressing every potential talent out there, Averbuck says. Sharef and Sedlet wanted to create a process that helps anyone - with any kind of background - shine beyond their resum.HireArts Take on RecruitingFor employers, HireArt is sort of a combination job board/ATS, but with much better sichtung capabilities. You head to HireArt, post a job, and it syndicates your posting. HireArt assigns you an account manager, whose job is to figure out what, exactly, you want from your new employee. We spend a lot of time upfront understanding what companies want, says Averbuck. Were not just going off of t he job requirements were not going to go off of some great idea we have. We do a call with the hiring manager to say, Tell us what youre looking for.Once HireArt has this information, it can start curating a candidate list - that is, a list of the top few candidates whom the platform determines are the best matches for you, out of all other applicants. In this way, HireArt is sort of like an ATS, separating the wheat from the chaff.Of course, the problem with ATSs is that so many of them filter candidates according to keywords on their resums. Hence the myriad articles on beating the system. And, at that point, a resum is pretty much worthless. It no longer shows off who a candidate is, but what a candidate knows a company wants to hear. Good luck trying to hire the best of the best in those conditions.HireArt, however, takes a different, more hands-on approach to candidate curation, using video interviews and work samples (more on those in a bit) to test relevant skills.Theres act ually two partes to the screening process, explains Averbuck. The candidate first sends in their resum, and then theyre invited back for a video interview. Whether they complete the video interview or not, in my personal opinion, is already an assessment of them.As Averbuck points out, applying to a job online is an absolute breeze, for the most part just send in your resume and see what happens. By asking applicants to complete a brief four-question assessment - two video questions, two written questions - HireArt hopes to test whether candidates really want the job or are just blindly sending off resums. The idea is that, if someone doesnt come back and do this extra 10-15 minute assessment, then theyre probably not that interested in the role, says Averbuck. Thats something that employers waste a lot of time on these days.Imagine, for example, posting an advertisement to Craigslist. How many applicants are you going to receive in total? (Conducting an experiment, writer Eric Aul d received 653 responses to a job ad in 24 hours. Afterwards, he took the ad down. How many more would he have received had he kept it up?) And how many of those are going to be quality candidates? (According to ERE, on average, more than 50 percent of applicants fail to meet the basic qualifications). An employers going to get 100-1000 resums on Craigslist, Averbuck says. You go through all of those resums, you pick out the best ones, and the first ten people you call just arent interested. They just kind of sent the resum because, Why not?Averbuck describes the video interview invite as the first line of assessment because, rather than assessing skills, it assess candidate interest. If a candidate cant be bothered to complete the assessment, they most likely cant be bothered to care much about the position if they land it.After this first layer of screening, we come to the actual assessment. The questions that HireArt asks candidates are specific to the level and the category of th e role which needs filling. For example, for a customer service role, we have them answer a customer service email, or we have them do a sample customer service call, says Averbuck. These are the work samples mentioned above little activities which provide snapshots of an applicants relevant skills. While HireArt generally deals with entry-level and non-technical jobs - the necessary skills for which are easier to assess online - the platform does have a process for evaluating higher-level candidates. For a more senior marketing job, for example, its a little harder to do work samples, but we ask for examples of prior work, or we ask them to talk about certain aspects of digital marketing that are going to be important for their jobs, says Averbuck. Its About FairnessFrom a candidate perspective - it feels weird to say this - but when Sharef and Sedlet started HireArt, they started it with a goal of fairness, of giving everyone a shot, says Averbuck. One can see why Averbuck feels weird saying that when youre used to screening candidates via the far-from-perfect systems of ATSs, screening candidates doesnt seem like an especially fair process. And the process is especially broken if youre screening for credentials instead of capabilities. But the hiring process should be fair, shouldnt it? Every applicant should have the chance to show an organization who they are. If who they are isnt right for that role, fair enough - but cutting candidates out before they get a chance to prove their worth seems not only cruel to candidates, but also counterintuitive to the companys mission. If youre looking to hire top talent, should you really be trusting resums and keyword filters? Can you afford to limit yourself to certain schools?Sharef and Sedlet started HireArt in part because they saw companies using the wrong criteria to hire people - e.g., looking for degrees instead of skills. They felt like a lot of companies were just screening for top-50 schools, Averbuck sa ys. Honestly, if youre a startup looking to hire a customer service person, for example, you probably dont even need to hire someone from a top-50 school. We started the company with the goal of showing that people were picking for the wrong categories, Averbuck explains. While HireArt acts as a third-party curator of candidates, Averbuck believes that this does not result in any sort of frustrating separation between applicants and companies. If anything, Averbuck sees HireArt as a way to bring prospective hires closer to employers If they do make it through to the top candidates, then theyre usually one of 5 or one of 10, Averbuck says. They get a lot of employer attention. They really do get the visibility.Going ForwardWeve figured out what we do well, Averbuck says of HireArt. Were at a point where we want to scale that. While HireArt is currently in the middle of raising capital to scale-up its operations, the company is also looking to improve some aspects of the platform. For ex ample, Averbuck says HireArt is looking to collect more data on how applicants are performing, so that it might leverage that information for the benefit of job applicants. Right now, we grade applications extensively, and we collect all of this data, but were working on how we can come around and figure out how to give this back to candidates, Averbuck says.HireArt also collects data on every candidate that gets hired, to see how well theyre doing and how long they stay.On a more general note, HireArt seems to see the value in constant improvement. As Averbuck notes before our conversation ends, We recognize that were definitely not there, in terms of Do we perfectly assess the abilities to do the job? But we assess it better than just a resum, so we want to keep improving how we assess it.Master the art of closing deals and making placements. Take our Recruiter Certification Program today. Listening 7 things fabulous listeners do differently

Listening 7 things fabulous listeners do differentlyListening 7 things fabulous listeners do differentlyListening is a bit like intelligence s of probing questions are What happened next? and Why did he say that? The key is to make certain that your questions really do add to your understanding of the speakers words, rather than deflecting the conversation to a different topic.4. Practice reflective listeningPsychologist Carl Rogers used the term reflective listening to describe the listening strategy of paraphrasing the meaning of whats being said in order to make certain youve interpreted the speakers words correctly.By doing this, you give the speaker the opportunity to clarify what she meant to say. When you practice reflective listening, dont simply repeat the speakers words to her. Use your own words to show that youve absorbed the information.5. Use positive body languageBecoming cognizant of your gestures, expressions, and tone of voice (and making certain theyre positive) wi ll draw people to you like ants to a picnic.Using an enthusiastic tone, uncrossing your arms, maintaining eye contact, and leaning towards the speaker are all forms of positive body language employed by great listeners. Positive body language can make all the difference in a conversation.6. Dont reisepass judgmentIf you want to be a good listener, you must be open-minded. Being open-minded makes you approachable and interesting to others. No one wants to have a conversation with someone who has already formed an opinion and is not willing to listen. Having an open mind is crucial in the workplace, where approachability means access to new ideas and help.To eliminate preconceived notions and judgment, you need to see the world through other peoples eyes. This doesnt require that you believe what they believe or condone their behavior it simply means that you quit passing judgment long enough to truly understand what they are saying.7. Keep your mouth shutIf youre not checking for und erstanding or asking a probing question, you shouldnt be talking. Not only does thinking about what youre going to say next take your attention away from the speaker, hijacking the conversation shows that you think you have something more important to say. This means that you shouldnt jump in with solutions to the speakers problems. Its human nature to want to help people, especially when its someone you care about, but what a lot of us dont realize is that when we jump in with advice or a solution, were shutting the other person down. Its essentially a more socially acceptable way of saying, Okay, Ive got it. You can stop now The effect is the same.Bringing it all togetherLife is busy, and it seems to whirl by faster every day. We all try to do a million things at once, and sometimes it works out. Avoid the Pitfalls of Being a New Working Mom

Avoid the Pitfalls of Being a New Working MomAvoid the Pitfalls of Being a New Working MomReturning to work is a tough transition for any mom. Maybe you dread it, maybe you cant wait, but its koranvers to surprise you. Here are eight common pitfalls working moms can fall into on their way back to the workplace. Pitfall 1 Waiting to Line Up Child Care When I was pregnant with my first baby, I got unsolicited advice on everything, from what to eat to what to buy. But nobody told me the most useful information- get on waiting lists for daycare centers immediately. By the time I toured centers the month before my delivery, I discovered that wait times for infant care were over one year Panicked, I signed up for a half dozen different lists and started praying.Fortunately, I was able to take six months leave, and our top choice daycare found a spot for us. Even if you dont anticipate needing daycare, sign up anyway. Maybe youll have to go back to work sooner than expected, or your mom or nanny will suddenly back out of caring for your baby. If you had laid the groundwork ahead of time, itll be much easier to figure out last-minute care. Pitfall 2 Being Passive About Child Care Once youve gotten on some daycare wait lists or lined up a nanny, dont cross the task off your list and forget about it. Youve taken the first step in the most important new relationship of a working moms life, and you must nurture it. Daycare centers are run by human beings, and, obviously, babysitters are people too. They want to know youll be easy to work with and youll value the important job they do. Make sure to check in with your top choice daycare centers or the babysitter youve lined up. Call after the baby is born, and periodically during your maternity leave. Im pretty sure it was my bi-monthly calls to our daycare center that got us a spot ahead of schedule. I aimed to show eager interest without nagging. If youre in a bind, showing up in person is the most effective techni que for getting into child care. Providers prefer engaged, interested parents. I know two new moms who strolled their baby into a center the week before they had to return to work and walked out with a spot. Pitfall 3 Going Back Full Steam Whether your maternity leave is six weeks, six months, or six years, returning to work is going to be an adjustment. If possible, return mid-week. You get a short first week back at work, and your baby gets an easy introduction to child care. You might also want to explore going back on a part-time schedule for the first few weeks or months. Some find it easier to stay in touch with work during maternity leave to help delegate work and keep projects moving along. That way they dont return to a pile of uncompleted tasks. Others would rather make a clean break and come back to a fresh start, or even to a brand new position. This tactic works best if your job is mora independent and you can wrap up projects before your maternity leave and start n ew ones when you return. Pitfall 4 Going It Alone You want to succeed as a mom. You want to feel capable. You can achieve both of these goals by asking for help. Youre more likely to find a happy balance as a working mom if you admit you have needs and require assistance. Trying to go it alone will only push you over the edge of exhaustion and frustration. Accept support from friends or relatives, whether its a few hours of babysitting or a casserole that saves you preparing dinner one night. And if you are raising your child with a partner, make sure its a true partnership, where you give and take help. Once you return to your job, seek out other moms at your workplace. They can give you vital information, from which paperwork you need to which managers to spare the baby stories. Moms of older children can reassure you that kids turn out fine even when theyre in childcare. Pitfall 5 Imagining Your Child Miserable You say goodbye, close the door, and head off to work. From t hat moment on, you dont know what your child is thinking or doing for the rest of the day. Dont make the mistake of imagining her crying her eyes out missing mommy. Thats usually just the first minute until a shiny toy or playmate distracts her. Some moms hide outside the closed door until the separation sobs subside. Or sneak in when the work day is over, to catch the children playing, dancing to music, or quietly enjoying a book. Ask your childs caregiver to take pictures during the day so you can see him engaged in activities or enjoying a laughing hug. Hang them over your desk as a reality check for when your fantasies turn sour. With older kids, schedule weekly phone check-ins. You can get a lot more out of a tween on the walk home from school than the half hour before dinner. Pitfall 6 Apologizing Youve got enough on your mind without worrying about what other people think of you. Dont waste an apology on the lady in the grocery store who frowns at the combo of your suit a nd stroller. Youll need all your apologies for when you wake your husband at 200 a.m. to get the baby, but it turns out shes sleeping soundly and her cries were just in your dreams. Pitfall 7 Expecting No Bumps The first week went smoothly. Youre loving the return to an interesting job in the adult world. And then your baby gets her first cold and wont sleep all night before your big presentation. Relax. Mama said there would be days like this. Youll get through it, and next time youll know to keep your sleep reserves high in case of an ear infection. You might want to put an emergency bag in your car with clean clothes for baby and mom, snacks, or even a new toy. You may get stuck in bad traffic with a screaming child or have to run an errand before you return home. Pitfall 8 Sticking to Your Guns Blindly Many working moms are used to making a plan and pushing forward until it succeeds. Life with a baby is rarely so straightforward. Give yourself permission to readjust your arrangements, whether its your work schedule or child care. Listen to your gut. If something truly isnt working for you or your family, change it.

Keep plants on your desk or even try small things like keeping your screensaver set to a beautiful nature scene or someplace that always makes you happy.Or just stop and breathe.Childers said, Close your eyes and take a few slow, deep breaths to be present an d really connect. Or sneak out to the break room and try a meditation app for a few minutes. It isnt a yoga or meditation class, but it might just add a few much-needed minutes of calm to your day.2. Spontaneous adventureIf you feel like nothing interests you anymore, maybe its time to try something new. Childers reminds us that Trying new adventures boosts our dopamine and serotonin levels, especially when theyre fun and spontaneous Additionally, when you celebrate trying new things, your brain connects being brave with pleasure, winning, and joy, so adventure becomes less scary and more rewarding over time. But dont panic. New adventures dont have to involve bungee jumping or running with the bulls. New to you is the main thing to keep in mind, so if youve dreamed of seeing the Northern Lights, maybe even starting to plan a trip or collecting travel resources will help you feel as though youre on the way.3. Combination self-careIn recent years, the notion of self-care has become le ss of a luxury and more something we accept as being a needed parte of our lives. But how do you find the right ways to care for yourself?Childers says your best bet is to Use a combination of relaxation modalities that appeal to multiple senses at once and enhance each other Run a hot bath with aromatherapy oils while playing meditation music, burn incense while writing or doing yoga, or listen to affirming self-hypnosis while exercising.Cant wait until you get home to give yourself a needed treat?Self-care and an office environment dont have to be mutually exclusive. Keep some calming desk toys around, or anything tactile that can take your mind out of a stressful moment even for a nanosecond. Use these as positive triggers to remind yourself that youll be able to better care for yourself sooner rather than later. Or invest in a ring with a favorite mantra engraved inside. I have a ring that I wear on extremely stressful days that has This too shall pass engraved on the inside. It gives me a hidden boost of calm.

10 things you can do every day to improve your personal development

10 things you can do every day to improve your personal development 10 things you can do every day to improve your personal development I am fascinated with  self-development.I see it as an art in itself, and one that takes a lifetime of practice to master.Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Ladders’ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more! That said, here are 10 things you can do in your  daily life  to improve your  personal development.1. Read about what you want to  improveDo you want to get better at a certain skill? Read about it.Be more meditative? Read books that explain that in detail.Want to be more productive? Spontaneous? Outgoing? Confident? All these topic areas are covered by books upon books that you can study - and by reading about it, it’ll always stay top of mind.2. Find a  mentorA mentor can be anyone from a peer who knows something you don’t, and you want to learn, all the way up to someone vastly more experienced who is willing to take you under their wing (in exchange for your working in some way for or with them).Mentorship is by f ar the fastest path of learning.3. Reflect at the end of each  dayIf you really want to take self-development seriously (and not just, you know, talk about it), you need to be constantly aware of how you can improve. And the only way to know how to improve is if you reflect and ask yourself where and how you still need some work.4. Create a strong practice  regimenIt’s your habits that unfold the results, not the other way around. You can’t live one life and expect to one day have another.  You have to put in place the daily habits that will allow the things you want to change to change.5. Find others to push you and train  withSelf-development is not just a solo game.In fact, the best self-development is done with others in some capacity.Spend time with people who are working on similar things as you, and you’ll find yourself growing with them at a faster rate than if you had tried to do it all alone.6. Create a reward/punishment systemThis is necessary for people who need to b reak bad habits.Sometimes, it’s a reward (or a punishment) that makes the difference between immediate and rapid change, and ongoing fleeting promises.7. Stay honest with yourselfNo amount of talking about it will ever instigate true change. This is the hardest part for people. It’s far easier to buy a book on self-development, carry it around, and say, “I’m working on being more present,” while staying constantly on your phone to text your friends about how you’re trying to be more present. You have to really be honest about it with yourself. You are your own judge.8. Find role models you can look up  toAgain, self-development is not easy, so it’s helpful to be able to look to others for inspiration, motivation, or even just daily reminders of how you can continue moving forward on your journey.9. Measure your progressOne of my mentors taught me, “If you can’t measure it, don’t do it.”Took me a long time to understand what that meant. Regardless of how ethereal t he thing that you want to work on is, you have to find some way to measure your progress. It’s the only way you’ll really know if you are moving in the right direction - and when/where to pivot as you go along.10. Consistency is the  keySelf-development doesn’t happen overnight. It happens slowly and deliberately. Consistency is what creates truly meaningful change - and this is what makes the process so difficult for people. It’s not that you pop and pill and you’re done. You don’t do it once and you’re “fixed.”Self-development is a daily practice and lifestyle. This article originally appeared on Inc. New study says men with daughters become richer

New study says men with daughters become richer New study says men with daughters become richer A May 2017 NBER working paper by Paul A. Gompers and Sophie Q. Wang of Harvard University points to promising evidence that being a parent to a daughter could be beneficial for senior partners at venture capital firms.“First, we find strong evidence that parenting more daughters leads to an increased propensity to hire female partners by venture capital firms. Second, using an instrumental variable set-up, we also show that improved gender diversity, induced by parenting more daughters, improves deal and fund performances,” the researchers wrote. There are specific reasons why, according to their data. Why having a daughter mattersThe researchers took a look at information on around 1,400 investing partners from the years 1990 to 2016, and 988 funds, and about 12,000 deals.Of the many findings, here are some that stood out.First, the lack of women employed in these positions: the researchers referred to  previous work, which revealed that there have never been a woman employed as a senior investor at about 75% of venture capital firms. The researchers found that the firms they studied hired an average of 4.58 new employees with any 5-year period, just 8.03% were women.Having a daughter instead of a son led to an “increase in excess return for the fund” of 3.2%.“We find that the proportion of female hires increases by 1.93% if you replace a son with a daughter for the existing partners in a firm. Given that about 8.03% of the new hires are female, this suggests a 24% increase in the probability of hiring a senior female investor when a son is replaced with a daughter for the existing partners,” the researchers write, based on their model.‘Daughters reduce the bias one has towards women’Based on their model, which is explained in much greater detail in the research, having a daughter instead of a son could have led to IPOs generating an extra $4.5 billion between 1990 and 2010.They defined success as “deals whose acquisition values are greater than the total amount of capital invested.”They found that current partners having a daughter instead a son, made the “female hired ratio” go up by 1.93%, versus the “base rate” of 8.03%, and the deal success rate went up by 2.88%.Gompers and Wang said their  findings didn’t necessarily mean that putting “a blunt gender quota” in place isn’t  necessarily the answer, but rather, eliminating bias would probably be  a better option.“First, parenting daughters reduces the bias that one has towards women, which leads to more female hires. Given that the pool of potential female investors is relatively untapped, these female investors are of higher quality than the counterfactual male hires. The higher quality hires then generate higher returns,” they wrote. They added that “different perspectives may reduce groupthink and allow venture capital firms to avoid costly investment mistakes,” and that “having more diverse backgrounds may attract a much wider deal flow an d, hence, average deal quality may increase.”Women  disappearing from workplacesJust like the representation of women in venture capitalism isn’t as nearly as high as it could be,  Natalie Kitroeff explores the  multi-layered concept of why some women are leaving work  in a recent article in the Los Angeles Times.Based on Bureau of Labor Statistics data, Kitroeff writes that “just over a third of prime-age women,” meaning those aged 24-54, had a job or looked for one in 1948. She adds that when 1999 came around, 76.8% of that group was in the labor force. The “participation rate” declined to 74.3% by 2016 and 12,000 more women were not searching for a job.“Some see the abrupt reversal as an unsurprising result of more than two decades without any major legislation making it easier for new parents to take time off or pay for childcare. Any number of articles and analyses have pondered the effects of a stubborn gender pay gap, inflexible schedules that keep women out of the executive suite and an undercurrent of discrimination that, at its worst, leaves women vulnerable to regular harassment. But top economists now are pointing to another explanation. Women seem to be leaving the workforce for some of the same reasons men are:Middle-class jobs are in short supply and working at the bottom pays less than it used to,” Kitroeff adds.We still have a long way to go in terms of women’s representation in diverse jobs- employing more at venture capital firms could be a start.

Reapplying for a Job After Being Rejected

Reapplying for a Job After Being Rejected Reapplying for a Job After Being Rejected Is reapplying for a job ever appropriate or worthwhile if you have not heard back? Perhaps you were rejected for the job  but have noticed that the job has been reposted. Theres a couple of ways to look at this. You could take a chance and reapply for the job and face rejection again. Or you could reapply for the job and end up getting an interview. In either case, theres really not much to lose except some time and effort. How do you go about reapplying for a job? The proposition of reapplying for a job can be awkward, but there are ways to ensure that your second application will be noticed and taken into consideration. First, youll want to think about why you were rejected or your resume was ignored. Is it possible that your resume was poorly formatted and therefore discarded by an applicant tracking system? Maybe it was something you said or did during the screening interview over the phone? It can also be something that was completely out of your control such as the company decided to hire someone else that didnt work out, or the company decided to hold off on hiring someone until now. Once you have an idea of what may have occurred, you will have a better shot at the job. Follow these 8 tips to reapply for a job #1 Read through the job advertisement carefully. You will want to notice how the job advertisement was written, the keywords that describe the job, the requirements that may have changed, and the instructions for how to apply. Believe it or not, this is often something that candidates take for granted and skip. You may want to ask a friend to read through the job advertisement with you to make sure you dont miss anything. #2 Review the company website and social media accounts. Think about how the corporate culture is displayed for visitors. How can you leverage your skills and personality to demonstrate that you are a perfect fit for the corporate culture? When you reapply this time, you may want to include a cover letter that talks to these points. You also want to identify who the point of contact is for the job and send a copy of your resume directly to them. #3 Learn more about the goals for the job. Maybe when you applied before you were only seeing the surface of things. Its important to note the overall goals of the company and how this job will be a part of this. If it’s a management role then dig even deeper into recent news, financial reports, and more to understand how this job fits into the bigger picture. #4 Use a different email address when reapplying for a job. This is a little trick that no hiring manager will reveal. The email address you use to register for and apply for a job is tied to a user account with an applicant tracking system. This means any subsequent jobs you apply for and get a rejected for (whether before or after talking with a recruiter) will be tracked under that user account. Take a fresh approach by establishing a professional email and then re-registering under that email address. This makes you look like a brand new candidate. #5 Improve your resume format and content. It is easy to get in a rut and keep using the same resume over and over again to apply for jobs. In a more competitive job market, you must look at this document as a sales oriented presentation. This means your resume could use an overhaul. Take the time to break down your top skills and include them in a strong career summary at the top of your resume, just under contact information. Include your employment experiences going back only 10 years. Use job-specific keywords to come up when a hiring manager searches their pool of applicants. Do this for every job you apply for. You can generate a list of keywords here: #6 Connect with colleagues. Make use of the connections that you have in the industry to gain insight about the company and its hiring practices. If you know of others who have worked at the company, invite them for coffee and approach the topic of getting referred this time. Learn if there are issues happening within the company influencing hiring decisions currently, or if there are new opportunities opening up soon. #7 Follow up as often as necessary. Here is where a lot of candidates simply give up. Once getting a rejection, they walk away and never follow up. This is not a good way to get a job. Instead, think like a salesperson and dont take “No” as your final answer. Send a thank you card to the recruiter you spoke to letting them know you appreciate their consideration and understand their decision at this time. Then, check back in every two weeks with alternating emails, phone calls, and mailed copies of your resume. #8 Increase your odds of being hired. In many communities, companies only hire through staffing agencies or associations. Be sure to increase your odds of getting on the radar with a dream company by registering for all the staffing and temporary agencies you can. Join industry associations, volunteer with community organizations where you can attend events and business mixers in your region - very often for free. Make strategic contacts and establish yourself as a highly skilled expert looking for a career opportunity. All of this activity makes you more visible to employers. Remember to take the time to create a brand for yourself as a job seeker, through a combination of your resume and online social media profiles. Be proactive and consistent and those companies rejecting you will be knocking on your door with job offers.

CPA Salaries and Demand Are Up

CPA Salaries and Demand Are Up CPA Salaries and Demand Are Up The 2019 Robert Half Salary Guide for Accounting and Finance Professionals contains some great news for public accountants hoping for a pay raise: CPA salaries continue to be strong across the board. Accountants who are well versed in tax and audit are especially in demand. For example, the midpoint CPA salary for public accountants with one to three years of experience in tax services is expected to be $57,500 in the year ahead. Those with a similar amount of audit expertise can expect a midpoint salary of $52,000. At the midpoint, candidates have average experience with the necessary skills to meet the job requirements. Work your way up to manager, and the salary goes up, too. A senior director of tax services, for instance, can expect a median salary of $134,000 in 2019. How does your compensation package compare with the average range in your city? You may be due (or overdue) for a pay raise. Starting salaries vary widely from city to city - San Francisco has a market variance of 41 percent, as an example - so use our Salary Calculator to find out what CPA salaries are offered in your city. How to ask for a higher CPA salary Many professionals, including accountants with in-demand skills and years of experience, feel uncomfortable bringing up the topic of a pay raise. But management won̢۪t know whether employees are dissatisfied with their salaries unless they̢۪re told. What̢۪s more, executives would much rather increase their staff̢۪s take-home pay than lose them to the competition. So don̢۪t wait for your supervisor to pay you what you̢۪re worth. Start preparing now, 1. Pick the right time. It̢۪s not a good idea to ask during peak periods, such as the height of tax season or the end of a fiscal year. Your request may need to go further than your immediate boss for approval, and there̢۪s a greater chance of things getting shelved or falling through the cracks when management is busy. Ideally, the right time to ask for a pay raise is after the busy season and when your boss isn̢۪t getting ready for a vacation. Even better is to bring up the topic after you̢۪ve just had a big win, such as landing a major corporate client or when the department exceeded its quarterly goal. Read All You Need to Know About CPA Jobs and Then Some. 2. Schedule a meeting. You need your boss̢۪s full attention when you make your case for a pay raise. This isn̢۪t something you stop your manager in the hall to discuss. Make sure you have enough time so you don̢۪t feel rushed. One possibility is to bring up the subject at the end of your annual performance review. You could also ask during a regularly scheduled one-on-one session, or request a meeting to discuss just this topic. 3. Know your value. How much more money should you ask for? Even knowing that salaries are on the increase for pubic accounting jobs, you likely don̢۪t know what others in your firm make, so the next best thing is to use the Salary Guide. When deciding on a number, aim for somewhere above the median but not more than 5 percent above your current salary. Be ambitious enough that you̢۪ll have room to negotiate, yet realistic enough that your boss doesn̢۪t question your judgment. 4. Present your case. A manager̢۪s decision whether to award a pay raise is often a question of value: What is an employee̢۪s contribution worth? So before your meeting, have a list ready of the many ways you̢۪ve added value to the firm, such as projects you̢۪ve completed and the number of clients you̢۪ve served. If you̢۪ve received thank-you notes from happy colleagues or satisfied clients, include those kudos as well. Be sure to leave this list with your manager, who may need to explain to their own boss why you deserve that raise. 5. Be ready to compromise. Negotiating salary may lead to your boss countering with a lower amount or offering you the full increase on the condition you take on additional responsibilities. Whether you accept this is up to you, but consider the offer and respond with respect. Take 24 to 48 hours to decide, if necessary. Beyond CPA salaries If your salary is already above market value or your employer is not in a position to offer a pay raise right now, you can try asking for employee perks and benefits. The Salary Guide points out that public accounting firms haven̢۪t historically been places that allow a healthy work-life balance, but that̢۪s changing as employers work harder to retain top talent. Depending on your situation, you could request additional time off, a flexible work schedule or a few days a week of working from home. Another alternative is professional development. This can mean the company helping you to obtain industry certifications, placing you in a mentorship program or paying for your membership to professional groups. In addition, management could assign you to projects with the intention of building your hard and soft skills as a precursor to a promotion and raise. Demand is up for CPAs, so take advantage of the moment. No firm wants to lose star performers, and few managers can afford to spare the time it takes to recruit, hire and train new accountants. The time is right for you to ask for a pay raise and get what your expertise is worth. Tags

3 Steps to Improving Client Retention Before Its Too Late

3 Steps to Improving Client Retention Before It’s Too Late 3 Steps to Improving Client Retention Before It’s Too Late Entrepreneurship is not all roses and unicorns. Sometimes, its tough. In fact, there are times when it has to be tough in order for your employees, your business, and even you, young  padawan, to grow. Sometimes, you lose clients. When it happens â€" and it does happen â€" business owners may wonder if sub-par performance, a lack of leadership, or the worst clients ever are to blame. Im not talking about letting clients go because they are no longer a fit or due to budget cuts; Im talking about when they tell you not to let the door hit you on the way out. Whatever the cause, there are steps you can take now to better manage unhappy clients before they leave. At Red Branch Media, we know that client and customer retention is critical.  According to a roundup of stats published by  Salesforce: - Its 6-7 times more costly to attract a new customer than it is to retain an existing customer. - 89 percent of consumers have stopped doing business with a company after experiencing poor customer service. - A 10 percent increase in customer retention levels results in a 30 percent increase in the value of your company. That last one is reason enough  for entrepreneurs  to start loving the ones theyre with! Stop the revolving door of clients by adopting  these  three best practices â€" all of which I learned from the school of hard knocks (I am their most distinguished graduate, aside from Marlon Brandon [R.I.P.]): 1.  Understand and Measure the Probable Cause Be proactive in obtaining regular feedback from clients and customers to better understand their issues. Dont wait for them to come complaining! Set up a system where continuous feedback is received from key stakeholders in the company. Be in communication with key decision makers on the clients side, or you run the risk of missing crucial direction from the people  who sign the checks. This often happens when working with larger corporations, and a decision may be made to end services with your business before you even know why! Warning Sign: If its been a while since youve talked to the person who brought your company on board, then you might need to schedule a call or meeting  ASAP! Try to connect with  your clients consistently through monthly intake calls, a weekly personal emails, or a daily texts â€" whatever works best for you and your clients. Short-Term Fix: Schedule a call within the next week (do not send an email) to let the client know you are aware of their issues and are taking action immediately to find a solution. Long-Term Fix: Send out monthly client feedback surveys via Google Forms, SurveyMonkey, or QZZR  to learn  how your organization can better serve its customers. Assure your clients all feedback is confidential. That will allow  them to be more honest  with you â€" even if they need to call out a not-so-helpful employee. 2. Make Client Retention Your No. 1 Priority Im really talking about  client satisfaction. Clients need to know they are important to your business, and they need to know you care about their business just as much as you care about your own. Following up on  the feedback surveys is the best way to reassure them of this. Also useful? Adding thank you notes to your invoices, the occasional freebie (just for clients), and gifts that are useful and show you care about the customers business. Warning Sign: If someone on your client roster says, I know youre terribly busy, but … or I know we dont pay as much as your other client that is a major red flag. It means they feel insecure about their access to you! Short-Term Fix: Follow up on completed  customer  surveys with a handwritten thank-you note explaining the new feedback process and why its important. Be transparent: Let your customers  know that client satisfaction is a top priority and that their business is genuinely appreciated. Long-Term Fix: Keep the client appreciation going all year by sending holiday thank-you cards or gifts, giving  new clients welcome gifts or company-branded swag, offering  discounts to loyal customers, or even shouting out your best  clients on social media. A little appreciation goes a long way. 3.  Never Stop Solving Issues Client  satisfactions surveys and discussions with customers will shed light on areas in need of improvement. Keep clients in the loop by acknowledging their feedback has been received and action is being taken to remedy any problematic situations. Warning Sign: Focus on the point person inside your organization who deals with the account. If they never have any constructive feedback, they might be skating. Buckle down on accounts that are fine. There is always something to improve. If an account is on autopilot, why would someone pay you to be the pilot? Short-Term Fix: Create a mini-brief that outlines key feedback points and the steps your company is taking to fix them. Give the client actionable bullet points with a reasonable timeline attached. Long-Term Fix:  Always provide status updates on important client issues. Schedule regular calls or face-to-face meetings â€" do whatever it takes to show clients you are available and ready to tackle issues head on as if they were your own. If you provide regular reporting (many service-based businesses do), include what youre improving or planning to improve in every status report. Also show where youve improved in the past (as directly relates to each clients business). â€" While clients will always come and go, its crucial that the flow of clients is the result of business changes â€" not communication problems, dissatisfied customers, or unhelpful employees. Enact short-term client retention strategies immediately and build processes surrounding long-term methods to improve client satisfaction before its too late.

How to Apply for Jobs Using Email

How to Apply for Jobs Using Email How to Apply for Jobs Using Email When you are using email to apply for jobs, its important that all your communications are as professional as they would be if you were mailing a paper resume and cover letter. Thats how your job application will get noticed by the hiring manager, opened, and read. Heres advice on how to apply for a job via email including every step in the process of getting your resume and cover letter ready to send your message. 01 Get Documents Ready When you are sending cover letters and resumes as email attachments, the first step is to save your resume and letter in the right file format.Your documents should be sent as either a PDF or a Microsoft Document. If you have word processing software other than Microsoft Word save your resume as a Word (.doc or .docx) document. File, Save As, should be an option in whatever word processing program you use.To save your documents as a PDF, depending on your word processing software you may be able to File, Print to Adobe PDF or File, Save As, and choose the PDF option. If not, there are programs you can use to convert a file to a PDF. Saving documents as PDFs helps ensure that no formatting errors will appear if the person opening the documents has a different operating system from your own.Use your name as the file name, so the employer knows whose resume and cover letter it is, i.e., janedoeresume.doc and janedoecoverletter.doc. 02 Write an Email Cover Letter Once you have saved your resume and cover letter and they are ready to send, the next step is to write an email cover letter to send with your documents. You can either write your cover letter directly in the email message or attach a copy of your cover letter. That way, you wont forget to include it afterward. 04 Add a Signature It is important to include an email signature with your contact information, so its easy for the company to reach you. Include your full name, your email address, and your phone number in your email signature, so the hiring manager can see, at a glance, how to contact you.To add your signature to your email message, click on File, Insert, Signature if you have a signature saved that you use for job searching. Microsoft Outlook will display a list of files in the default file folder of your computer. If your files are stored in a different folder, click on the appropriate folder.Click to select the file you want to add to your email message, click on Insert to attach the document to your email message. In Gmail, click the paperclip image to add your documents to the message. 06 Proofread and Send a Job Application Before you click send, be sure to proofread your email for grammar and spelling. How To Answer Tell Me More About Yourself in a Job Interview

How To Answer Tell Me More About Yourself in a Job Interview How To Answer Tell Me More About Yourself in a Job Interview Landing an interview with a recruiter is one of the first, and most important, steps in achieving your employment goal. While most interviews are relatively straightforward and easy to navigate, there is one common inclusion that people many times have trouble with: Tell me about yourself. However, this question is where you can truly set yourself apart from the rest. As such, boning up on the guidelines to follow is an excellent plan. Some interviewers like to pop this question first, while other prefer to wait until later on in the interview. Recruiters have different motives for posing it to you, such as to see if they can glean the extra information a direct question may exclude. Many times, their goal is simply to see if you have come to the interview prepared. Preparing for this question may take a little time and effort, but it will pay off in spades once you actually get in front of your questioner. The worst way you can answer it is with the popular reply, “What would you like to know?” Not only does this frustrate an interviewers goal of understanding you better from how you talk about yourself and your accomplishments, it also sounds like you did not take the interview seriously enough to even anticipate the question. The best way to prepare is similar to if you were rehearsing a speech. Develop your answer, and practice, practice, practice! Stand in front of a mirror, and practice until things flow freely and naturally. The meat of your answer should be a highlight of the things you have accomplished, if they tie in to the position you are vying for. Following are some key points to remember for when the question inevitably does arrive. Avoid sharing mundane personal information Some parts of your personal life, such as hobbies or special skills, are definitely pertinent when you are queried about yourself. However, drab facts, like where you were born, or how many siblings you have, are simply irrelevant. Keep in mind, the recruiters sole focus is what you can do for their company. Your answers should clearly outline what you have accomplished in the past, and how you are different from the rest of the multitude of candidates. Start Out With Your Bonafides Given the level of pride you feel, as well as how much effort you invested in getting them, your specific credentials are an easy-to-remember way to start things out. Not only that, everything that follows is sure to sound better, since your official bonafides are the first thing they hear. Detail Your Employment-Related Accomplishments Certain qualities and achievements are important in virtually any job. These include strong demonstrations of leadership, a solid work ethic, and exceptional personal and professional confidence. Take a trip down memory lane, and come up with a few specific scenarios in which you demonstrated these qualities and accomplishments. Stay On Point The recruiter you are interviewing with is not a personal friend, so avoid babbling about personal issues best left to those you are close with. Try to keep the awkward pauses to a bare minimum, you should be prepared enough that excessive thinking should be unnecessary. It is a good rule of thumb to keep your response to this query at or under about a minute. Explain why you are interested in the job Unless the position you are seeking is a highly-advanced or specialized one, chances are most people can perform it with the right training. One of the best ways to help your recruiter understand that you are different from the rest of the horde is to go into detail about why you are passionate about this type of work specifically. Tie personal hobbies and interests into the qualities and requirements of the job in question. Above all, never make it seem like you are only interested in the paycheck. Its Storytime! Cold hard facts are good for certain situations, but answering this important question is not one of them. Your goal is to engage your listener, and the best way to do that is with a story that shows clearly a specific situation where you displayed the traits and experience the recruiter is looking for. It really doesnt even matter if the story is one about the work you would be doing directly. As long as it is engaging, and highlights a major and applicable achievement, it is worth its weight in gold.   Stay Away from Common Cliches If there is one thing a recruiter knows better than virtually any other type of employee, it is all of the catch phrases and cliches used by many job seekers. You want to be exceptional, and stand out from the rest, and common cliches sound canned and generic. Phrases like “I am a team player,” or “I have a really strong work ethic,” have been used so much that any effectiveness they once had has long since been destroyed. You would be much better served by working these qualities into the stories you will tell, and the individual examples you will share. Now that you have a basic understanding of what actually works when asked about yourself, this query no longer should hold any fear or anxiety when it comes up. Adding these tips and truisms to your verbal arsenal is usually one of the best ways to see that spark of interest in you light up your recruiters eyes.
